Make things pretty with a purpose.

When I started my career as a designer, I thought I was going to be making boring things pretty. Through my narrow view of design, it seemed like nothing more than a tool to make the world and information just slightly more beautiful. I went into Visual Communicaitons believing that I wanted to just be a designer, but I quickly discovered that painting and drawing were not going to get me where I wanted to go. They were fun, but served very little purpose in my grand scheme of things.

After a brief identity crisis, I discovered a major at Ball State called Journalism Graphics, and it quickly became my purpose. It ultimately made me realize that designing for the sake of design was a meaningless task. The best way to design is to design with a purpose and carefully consider the audience.

Today, I proudly refer to myself as a Visual Storyteller because it more accurately describes my goal. Consider an audience, and convey the message to the audience in a visual way that will help them understand it. Make everything pretty with a purpose.
